LED Dash Light Upgrade (La Bella Ferrara)

Post by nelsonj »

Update: LED dash instruments lights installed.
Below is a writeup of my swap from standard lights to LED dash lights. My temp gauge light died, so I decided that, while I had the dash apart I would try LEDs. I only replaced the backlights (to try and get the dash brighter) and left standard lights for the oil idiot light, driving lights, high beams, and low on gas.
I got my lights from http://www.superbrightleds.com and they were a 5 element, about 80 lumen part (part number 194-CW5-CBT cool white). They were $3.95 per bulb - here is the receipt:

Note - most of my lights were 194 (I think) but my clock had a different light (per below). I checked my parts box and my old tach had lights similar to my clock. So, you should look at your gauges to see what type of lights they use before ordering parts. I had to do special (non-destructive) wiring for the clock and one light on my tach. The rest of the lights were plug and play. Note that the lights were not as snug as the originals, and one light fell into my speedo and I couldn't recover it - $4 down the drain.

Now for before and after pictures. I used the same camera, lens, aperture, shutter and ISO speed for all pictures. This should give you a true apples to apples comparison. For each gauge, the first picture is "before", the second picture is "after" - going from left to right on the dash. Note the car was not running at the time (my lights get brighter once the motor is 1000+ RPMs). The dash was "max bright" with the rheostat fully clockwise.

Verdict and thoughts: My dash wasn't that bad to begin with. But it's noticeably brighter now (and can still be dimmed). The color is more blue and less yellow than original, but still looks good to my eyes - newer rather than vintage. The green light on the speedo and the set up of the tach make those two gauges look like they have different lights from the other three gauges.

Bottom line: I don't think this mod is for everyone. While the gaugues are brighter, I used 80 lumen bulbs ($4 each) but going with 100 lumen bulbs (at $6 each) would be even better. The fact that not all the gauges have the same "tone" may bother some and may make it look less than professional. I spent about $35 and had to do a bit of creative soldering and wiring - I plan on leaving the LEDs in because the dash is noticeably brighter.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Peace out.

I've done this mod on several cars and you do need at least a 5 led bulb to get even light across the gauges

Thanks for the post. I am pretty sure my stock lights are brighter than yours were but I don't know why. I have taken all the gauges apart to clean the lens. I took note that the lights bulbs are behind the instrument masks and the lights can only pass from behind the mask around the outer edges. This makes uniform lighting though out a gauge almost impossible. I like the look of your modification. I was originally opposed to LED replacements because years ago they were not dimmable. Today's bulb replacements are and this makes them a great choice. Especially for folks who would like a change of color. Most are available in a few different colors.
Again nice job.

Very nice! I recently replaced the 194s in my dash with 168s, which are slightly higher wattage, but it didn't make much difference. I may give LEDs a try, as I would prefer brighter gauges at night. Thanks.

I did this and had an issue with an LED bulb not completely going into one socket. The bulb seemed a bit larger. When I forced it in, the bulb fell out inside the gauge. I finally got it out with an hour of working with a pair of needle nose pliers. I gently filed the socket opening and finally got it to work. Like you, I just used the LED's on the gauge illumination, not the warning lights. I like the look much better.

Ok, so I'm in the midst of an LED upgrade to the dash (well the whole car actually) I am wondering, should all the indicator lights also be LED? I seem to recall reading somewhere that some indicator, or idiot lights, need the incandescent bulb to work properly. Can anyone confirm this? I cant find the original post where i read this.
I am also wondering what LED anyone has used for the clock? The fibre optics? Does anyone have any comments about lighting the heater controls with LED. Just askin', Thanks
I'll be posting an after picture when I'm done. We all know what the before looks like...

If I remember correctly, this is what I used for the clock.

Hi all - thanks for the nice words.
Concerning the clock bulb: I used the same 194 LED in the picture, but I soldered wire leads (+ & - ) on THE LED BULB. I then hooked up the ground lead to the clock's ground tab, and then wired the hot (+) to the same source as the original clock light. The original light and mount is still behind my dash if I want to reverse the upgrade. But, it would be MUCH easier (and more reliable) just to get the correct bulb in the first place!

I have the wrong tach in my dash (I'm supposed to have a shallow tach that has 1 backlight, and then 2 idiot lights (for oil pressure and alternator). The deep tach (currently in my dash) is supposed to have 2 backlights and only 1 idiot light (oil pressure). Long story but my alternator light is now just dangling behind the dash, and I parallel wired a second backlight.

My guess is that these new diodes are circuit equivalents (I don't think polarity matters on these) to the old incandescent lights - but frankly at $4/bulb for LEDs I wouldn't use them for the warning lights. For the warning lights original bulbs work just fine and seem the best way to go from a $$ (and performance) perspective. Save your money for beer after the job. :)

Hi guys,

My signals are LED, has anyone upgraded to an LED flasher?

Thanks

I used the heavy duty flasher from auto ricambi when I changed to LED bulbs, and it works perfectly.

Dash LEDs are on hand for the next time I have to go into the dash.
