83-85 Courtesy Light

Post by davery »

It seems in taking my dash out either I forgot to label or the labels came off the connections for the courtesy light. The only wiring diagram I have is for the 80-82 and it has black, red/black and black/violet wires going to the light. I did not see any wires with these colors. Before I start disassembling my dash (again) can anyone confirm the colors of the wires that go to an 83-85 courtesy light? Or maybe forward a copy of an 83-85 wiring diagram? Thanks so much.

I'm assuming it doesn't work in the picture configuration?

I would bet that the all black wire goes to the "right/single" side of the bulb as you only need one ground, and the other two wires feed the "left/double" side of the bulb (one from each door switch)

Switch the black/red with the all black and it should work

one from each door switch
Wrong. 1 positive and 2 grounds. One from the doors switch and one from body because you can light it with door close.

It's work when I use the switch, but not when I open the door.

The 1984 wire diagram shows power is Red/green, door jam switches wire is black and the ground for the switch on the light is violet/black. Looking at the photo ekstrandt posted I can't make out these colors. If when you have the switch on the light in one position it lights that means the power is good and the ground from the ground spider near the ignition key is good. That leaves the grounds for the door jam switched not getting to the light when the switch on the light is in the other position. It is very common for the dor jam switched to get corroded and not make a good contact. I would remove one of the door switches and touch the wire to ground and see if the light lites.

I'm going to spend some time with it tomorrow. I may have an incorrect wire also. My two pos wire have the plastic protection over the connection, the pic only has one connection with plastic protection. I could be using the wrong connection. Also, I have a battery drain which could or could not be related to this. Thanks for the info.
